Sexuality is an important aspect of each person’s identity. To learn about sexuality and importance of sexual health is as necessary as learning about other aspects. The guardians and parents of children are a primitive source of sexual education for them but they do learn about the topic from the secondary sources which can be highly misleading. The adversarial effect of this kind of information cannot be ignored. Therefore, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of school and educators to provide precise and appropriate information to the young people regarding the subject.
The aim of sexual education in school is to provide students with a discerning ability relating to their choices and a favorable view of sexuality. It is to ensure a healthy future for them. A healthy future for a generation with appropriate knowledge to lead positive sexual lives enriched with relationships and responsibility.
We need to acknowledge the fact that children will come to know about sexuality in one way or another. It is better to teach them the coherent set of principles rather than allowing the misguided information to toy with their minds. Young people are highly receptive to their surroundings and they have a very great tendency to get influenced by it. In the era of the Internet, the curiosity of children cannot be caged. Seeing the provocative images or misleading graphics can damage their ability to value themselves and others completely. These mistakes can make sex life very challenging and negative. The right kind of education helps children to perceive the images pertaining to sexuality and media messages correctly.
Sexual education is also necessary for medical purposes. It teaches young people to learn the names of body parts correctly. It ensures that they are aware of reproduction process of human beings. It makes them understand the value of family relationships. All this can be infused in the mind of children according to their age and development. There should be a certain respect and feeling associated with the sexuality. The education is conducive to permeate this feeling in people from an early age.
An ideal sex education plan should be adopted by all schools. The plan should be implemented religiously throughout the curriculum.
The plan can include the following aspects:
- Preparing students for the alterations in their bodies when they hit the puberty.
- Debunking all the myths about sexuality which students listen from all the wrong sources
- Teaching students to accept their sexuality in their own skin and accept their changing bodies in a propitious manner.
- Teaching them to grow in a prejudice free and discrimination-free environment
- Teaching them to eradicate biases in their opinions relating to homophobia and gender roles
- Making students to learn to deal with the peer pressure
Communicating with the students is highly imperative. The parents and educators have this huge responsibility to provide the young people a discerning ability so that they can tackle the problems wisely.
